ZHAO Shuting
PhD candidate in anthropology at EHESS, Paris
Zhao Shuting is a PhD candidate in anthropology at EHESS in Paris, working as a cultural consultant and an art news contributor for creative agencies in France. Her doctoral thesis focuses on vernacular photography in China from the post-Maoist period to the pre-digital era (1980-2010). This research is both a reflection on photography as an object of anthropological research, and an oral history investigation that aims to gain a better understanding of the traces of the communist state under transformation in everyday life. She holds a joint-master’s degree in media, communication and creative industries from SciencesPo in Paris and Fudan University in Shanghai. In her Master’s thesis, she examined the emergence of modernity in Chinese private life through photographs of urban families.
